For most of my life, I have lived in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, creating art since 2000. My practice moves fluidly between oil on canvas, mixed media, and assemblage, offering a layered exploration of form, texture, and meaning. I am drawn to the vastness of landscapes and the quiet magic of forests—places that hold both mystery and sanctuary.
A recurring motif in my work is the pilgrim—a solitary figure navigating urban roads or rural paths, sometimes on horseback or accompanied by a loyal dog. This presence speaks to movement, seeking, and the ever-unfolding journey of being.
Following the lockdown, my focus turned inward, exploring the home as a place of refuge—a space where we find shelter from life’s storms, where laughter and connection intertwine with solitude and introspection.
My 2023 oil paintings emerged from a long road trip through the Natal Midlands, tracing Lions River, Kamberg, and the Maloti Mountains along dusty, rutted roads. Distant villages and homes scattered across wide horizons became reflections of what brings me joy: unbounded landscapes, the rhythms of rural life, and the presence of animals—dogs, chickens, goats, cattle—woven into the fabric of daily existence. Bare feet press into the earth, moving through open fields beneath vast, clouded skies where birds carve unseen pathways of freedom.
Since then, I have begun a new series that merges the sweeping marks of landscapes in oil with heavily textured foregrounds, characteristic of my mixed-media practice. From these surfaces, the subtle forms of shelters emerge—suggestions of home, presence, and belonging.
As always, I weave the symbols X, V, and III into my work—each carrying layered meaning. X marks significance, mystery, and identity. V speaks to victory and an open heart. III, among its many interpretations, represents a trinity—me, you, and the unseen energy that binds us—community.
