Gallery glimpses
The Mercury ~ September 24 2007
DURBAN has a wide range of fine and varied art on view and among the more exciting exhibitions currently to be seen is that at Gallery 415.
Situated at 415 Umgeni Road, the gallery presents 777, an exhibition of work by seven of Durban's best young illustrators.
Each artist is featured three times - in a self-portrait, in a photographic portrait by Roger Jardine and in an illustration by Kim Longhurst.
Participating artists are Colwyn Thomas, Richard Hart, Alistair Palmer, Torsten Fehsenfeld, Scott Robertson, Trevor Paul and Peter Bircham. Contact the gallery at 031 309 6401 for more details.
Also worth visiting is the African Art Centre in Florida Road, where there is an exhibition by Sibusiso Duma, a young artist who was a student of the late Trevor Makhoba.
Shadows
The 35 works, presented under the banner Ithunzi - Shadows , is almost sold out. Its title comes from Duma believing shadows in a painting are as important as people or objects.
Among noteworthy pieces on view are Journey to 2010, in which Duma explores new ways of depicting images using dots, rather like beadwork.

Students exploring the relationship between what they see and what they feel was at the heart of an exhibition at Artspace Durban, which closed at the weekend.
Garret Artists' exhibition, Landscape 2007: Expanding Horizons, featured some striking works, which showed that by developing flashes of inspiration, artists can create new frameworks for ongoing ideas.
Lara Mellon, whose work was among those shown, will also feature in the gallery's next exhibition, opening at 6:30pm today. It runs until October 13.
Titled Earth, Light and Spirit, this will feature works by Durban-based Mellon, Maggie Strachan and Roz Cryer. More information contact this exhibition from 031 312 0793.
Finally, make a note that an exhibition of the fine art jewellery has opened at the DUT Art Gallery on the Steve Biko campus on the Berea.
Michelle Pujol's unique designs, influenced by nature's organic forms, fall between being sculptural artefacts adn functional pieces of jewellery.
Pujol has a Fine Art Diploma and a Jewellery Design Bachelor's Degree.
